The Buttermarket is a compelling story of trust and interdependency evolved through architectural ingenuity. The story was set in motion by the conviction of a principal, Claire Fear, in an early-career architect, Jen Boddington. Redruth Revival (CIC) as client understood how the threads of community cohesion in their town had become severed by history, politics, social fracture and apathy. Trusting that their buildings contained the potential to illicit renewed civic-pride, they needed an architect to inspire a connected community again within new shared spaces. The pathway for transforming this cluster of five listed buildings and reconnecting them to the history of Redruth, was a story that needed to be written from scratch. Embracing this responsibility with enthusiasm, trepidation and courage. What Jen lacked in experience was overcome with diligence, determination and creativity. Blending technical and procedural rigour with exquisite design craftsmanship. Demonstrating organisational skill, diplomacy and leadership fuelled by passion and honesty, always in service to the people of Redruth. Delivering client satisfaction and joy beyond their expectations. Shaping a new place, informed by deep empathy with regional history, inspiring community revival that’s already spreading beyond its physical borders. Matthew Goldschmied 2026
“It was a privilege to work alongside Redruth CIC, and to learn from the buildings, heritage and community. I am grateful for the recognition and the opportunity to share the skills and insights I’ve gained from the project to others through the Stephen Lawrence mentorship programme.”
